CDS extension for exporters

HMRC have announced that the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) will not be compulsory for exporters to use until 30th November 2023. This is an 8-month extension to the original deadline of 30th March 2023 which was due to represent the date that the customs software CHIEF would be shut down and, fully replaced by CDS.

A HMRC representative stated:

We have moved the deadline to enable us to spend more time working with the industry in delivering and testing critical functionality as well as the support needed to help declarants move across to the new system. The extra time also allows businesses and stakeholders more time to prepare their customers and software products for the November deadline.”

Importers have already made the migration to CDS and should continue to use the system. More information about the timeline for CDS export will be made available from HMRC by the end of January 2023.
