During a speech on 30th June, delivered at the British Chamber of Commerce Annual Conference, the International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan announced major plans to lift around 100 trade barriers. These barriers have been targeted by Department for International Trade as being major obstacles blocking British trade.
The Secretary’s ambition is that through this “bonfire of barriers”, we could open the door to over £20 billion of export opportunities for the economy. These range from restrictions on UK-qualified lawyers operating in Japan, and rules which delay British medical devices from entering South Africa, to restrictions on meat exports to Asia.
